The Greater Humboldt Park Community Diabetes Empowerment Center has been at the forefront of the Greater Humboldt Park Community Campaign Against Diabetes. The mission of the Center is to reduce the impact of Diabetes and other diseases in the Humboldt Park Community.
Our goal to bring free and low cost resources to the community by working in partnership with medical providers and community organizations. The center’s importance stems from the high incidence of Diabetes among adults in Humboldt Park, which is 14% higher than other Chicago area neighborhoods.
Not only is Diabetes more prevalent within our community, the impact of this disease on the Puerto Rican population was found to be three times higher (21%) than the national average as reported in a study by the Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) in 2005. Thus, the Center plays a vital role in advocating and working to improve the health of the entire community.
