Mission & Vision

The vision of River City Community Church is to become a multi-ethnic community of Jesus-followers that transforms the city of Chicago through worship, reconciliation, and neighborhood development.

Worship. Jesus taught that every human being is created to be a worshiper–they are born to live with something as their central object of affection. When that central object of affection for a man or woman is not God, it is always replaced by something else (e.g., relationships, money, job, power, etc.). Our vision at River City is to see every person have a powerful relationship with their Creator, learning to have God as the central object of their affection. We also desire for River City to be a place that people of all spiritual backgrounds can come as they are to hear the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. John 4:23-24, Exodus 20:2-5, Psalm 96.

Reconciliation. Jesus taught that humanity has been created in God’s image, but that continued disobedience in an already fallen world breaks the intended harmonious relationship between God and His people. Reconciliation is God’s desire to mend those relationships. Our vision at River City is to become a community of faith that sees each person become reconciled to God and become restorers of harmony here in Chicago across racial, class, and gender divides. 2 Corinthians 5.11-21, John 17.20-26, Revelation 7.9.

Neighborhood Development. Dr. John Perkins, a modern-day hero of the faith, says that success of a church should ultimately be defined not by size, but by the degree to which that church transforms its neighborhood. This kind of bold statement finds roots in the way Jesus lived; he became one of us as he dwelled with humanity, and his public life was marked by a keen love for the issues of compassion, social justice, and economic equality. Our vision at River City is that we would live with this same awareness in our 1-mile circle around Humboldt Park, and be a voice and advocate for those that may not otherwise be heard. Genesis 2:15, Isaiah 58:6-12, Amos 5:12-24.
