West Humboldt Park Farmers Market: A Prosperous One-Stop Shop

The West Humboldt Park Farmers Market began during the summer of 2012 to address the problem known as ‘food deserts,’ lack of access to healthy food options in the West Humboldt Park (WHP) community. Since its grand opening, the market has achieved many successes. During summer and autumn months of this year, the market changed its venue to the Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) parking lot, at 3601 West Chicago Avenue. It continues to flourish into a one-stop shop where community members can gather to purchase healthy food options such as fresh fruits, vegetables and so much more!


Building Community Leadership at Block Club Network Meetings

The Block Club Network Crime and Safety Meetings are heading in a positive direction as Block Club Network (BCN) members facilitate and lead discussion in monthly meetings. Members are enthusiastic about building community leadership, diligently working on what’s important to them, which includes housing, jobs, family, safety and maintaining the character of their neighborhoods.  


Revitalized Ujima Community Garden

The word ‘Ujima’ originates from Kwanzaa, meaning collective work and responsibility. The Ujima Community Garden stands for just that. Once a vacant lot, full of contaminated soil, it has finally transformed into a beautiful garden, thanks to the many partners and residents who have contributed to its development.

Chicago Delegation travels to Human Rights Summit in San Juan

San Juan- Renowned international specialists in Human Rights will meet in San Juan from December 7 to 10, 2012, in the Summit on Human Rights, in the Emilio S. Belaval Theater of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón [Sacred Heart University], in Santurce. The Summit is aimed at familiarizing the public with the current Human Rights situation in the world and in Puerto Rico, and pointing out the intimate relationship between the topic and the case of Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.


‘Working Together for an AIDS-Free Generation’. World AIDS Day Vigil and Parranda

On Saturday December 1st, 2012 the Puerto Rican Cultural Center commemorated World AIDS Day and remembered all those individuals who have passed from AIDS and who live with HIV/AIDS with a Vigil and Parranda.  


Vida/SIDA Updates

As a follow up to all the World AIDS Day events, Queer Fest America held a benefit concert for El Rescate Transitional Home at The Mutiny, 2428 N. Western Ave. 

 

The night started off with a showcase highlighting a David Bowie tribute band Stardust, The Cathy Santonies, The Recruitment and Ez Kabage. Attendees were encouraged to bring blankets and winter coats.
