Grow Your Business Training Program to Begin in April 2013

As a business owner would you like to:

  • Learn to think more entrepreneurially?
  • Learn how to better manage your business?
  • Better understand how to utilize the internet and e-commerce?
  • Develop a business plan and strategically plan for the future?

The Grow Your Business training program will provide you with over 80 hours of instruction specifically designed to improve your bottom line.  The goal of this training program is to dramatically increase your operating efficiency and take advantage of growth opportunities.

Planned Format: Course Start:  April 2013 Class: 3 hour class 1 day / week (day tbd) for 20 weeks Location: Humboldt Park location (tbd)

This program is provided in collaboration with the Institute for Workforce Education, a division of St. Augustine College.  The entire training program is valued at over $6,000 but full scholarships are available.  For those that qualify, the program will be free.

This program will be delivered in partnership with the City of Chicago Department of Community Development’s TIFWorks program which has a strategic focus on helping small businesses develop and grow through workforce education and training. Businesses must be located within specific TIF districts to qualify. 

Course Objectives:

After completing this training program designed for small business owners and/or managers, participants will be able to:

  • Effectively apply proven small business management techniques to improve the performance of their businesses.
  • Understand small business greening practices and apply green interventions to a variety of areas of their business operation.
  • Conduct an energy and water audit among others of their small business and develop plans on how to become more efficient.
  • Understand and apply basic safety and security practices for their small business.

 

Course Outline:

This 81 hour course will teach participants a variety of skills including:

  • Management (supervision, recruiting, legal issues and others)
  • Service management (customer service, marketing, sales and others)
  • Financial management (basic accounting, budgeting, forecasting and others)
  • Technology applications (introduction to computers, e-commerce and Excel and/or Word)
  • Safety and security including OSHA requirements for small businesses
  • Green management (energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling, green marketing, green business, grant opportunities and others)

We are currently in the process of recruiting businesses for this program.  Owners and managers are eligible.  We anticipate a start date of March/April.  Classes will be held at a location in Humboldt Park. The cost of the training program is over $6,000 but full scholarships are available for businesses that qualify.
