West Humboldt Park Farmer’s Market a Success

West Humboldt Park Farmer’s Market a Success

The first ever West Humboldt Park (WHP) Farmer’s Market & Bazaar opened for business on Saturday, June 5th. According to visitors, volunteers, and the Healthy Communities Initiative Committee (HCIC) Members it was a great success.

This project is a result of Strategic Planning for the First Community Land Trust of Chicago (FCLTC).  That planning began in 2006 with a hope from participants that “in 5 years, WHP would be a healthy, beautiful, safe, and affordable mixed income community, plentiful in options and opportunities for all of its residents.” Seven strategies were developed to tackle the concerns of residents. The WHP Farmers Market & Bazaar addresses the strategy to bring affordable, healthy food choices and recreational options to this neighborhood where residents are faced with substantial health risks such as obesity, diabetes, asthma, hypertension, and arthritis.

The Market features vendors selling an array of locally grown produce items, plus a variety of other items such as Avon, gift baskets, jewelry, and vintage clothing. Live entertainment, African drumming and dance, resource vendors, and lots more are also on hand. The August – October Market Days will have cooking demonstrations, nutrition education, and some workshops on at-home gardening.

The Market is supported by the WHP Development Council, its sister organization FCLTC, Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS), Chicago Commons, Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC), and 27th Ward Alderman, Walter Burnett, Jr. We would like to count on your support too. Upcoming Market Days are August 7th, September 4th, and October 2nd.
