Tutoring E.S.L., GED, and Citizenship at the Association House of Chicago

Since 1899, the Association House of Chicago has been working in Chicago’s West Town and Humboldt Park, helping recent immigrants to adjust to the demands and rigors of beginning a new life. Today we serve thousands of families each year through educational and vocational programs, along with providing counseling and financial services for families in need.

We are currently looking for energetic and culturally sensitive volunteers to join our team working as tutors and assistants in our Spanish GED, English as a Second Language (E.S.L.), and Citizenship programs. Volunteers will work as one-on-one tutors and/or as assistants in the classroom to supplement the different learning needs of the students. It is required that the volunteer be fluent in English for E.S.L. and Citizenship and/or be fluent in Spanish for Spanish GED.

Our Expectations of the Volunteer:

  • Dedicate at least 3 hours a week.
  • Be a fluent English Speaker (ESL; Citizenship) or Spanish speaker (Spanish GED)
  • Volunteer must complete a brief orientation and approximately 12 hours of training through the Association House.
  • The tutor must exhibit cultural sensitivity, patience, and clarity.
  • The tutor should direct the student towards resources that will help them improve their skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish speakers are wonderful!
