The Smart Way to Travel: Bus Rapid Transit

The Smart Way to Travel: Bus Rapid Transit

A system such as the bus rapid transit (BRT) has been reinforced in places like Colombia, France, Mexico, and India among others.  This strategy has not yet been envisioned in the City of Chicago particularly speaking by the North Avenue from Harlem to Western in Humboldt Park. A plan like this would massively benefit the community. It is not surprising that people are now looking for easy and efficient ways to get from one destination to the other. For this exact reason, the bus rapid transit system is the right strategy to take into consideration.

BRT involves stations, vehicles, and busways combined together to create one whole transit system. The street would be divided by plants in the middle of the street, and the buses would be running down the center of the road not at the edges. The idea of buses running down the center would minimize the dilemma of turning vehicles and traffic. It would also have dedicated bus lanes only for the bus rapid transit. The buses would be making stops within every half of mile instead of every block in order to enhance faster transportation.

The level boarding of BRT would be flat in order for people to board easily and without any difficulty making the boarding experience reliable and convenient. Small BRT stations would be place also in the middle of the street, priority pedestrian crossing would also be reinforced.  Also BRT would have multiple doors in every bus to speed the entry and exit distribution. It is important to mention that fare payments must be paid prior to boarding. By doing so, it would eliminate the delay caused by passengers paying on board saving even more time. There would also be full equipped BRT stations including temperature control depending on the climate.

In addition to the BRT planning, the benefits of having such program are inarguable. Because of the high amount of automobiles, BRT would serve to alleviate traffic congestion. This would minimize the number of automobiles on the street, as well as, the carbon dioxide that leads to pollution. In other words, people would become aware and eventually passengers riding BRT would not ride it just because they have to but rather because they made the decision to use it. Moreover, traffic safety is also a factor that contributes to BRT.

According to the World Institute website, Latin American streets with BRT systems had an average of 40 percent reduction in fatalities and injuries. This being the case, a reduction of traffic crashes may be also be seen in Humboldt Park North Avenue. Furthermore, a plan like this involves a capital cost. In fact, the capital cost of BRT if taken into action would cost less than the light rail transit (LRT). According to an article by Robert Cervero from the institute of urban and regional development, in the US, a typical busway was estimated to cost around 60 percent less to build per mile than a typical light rail system even though average operating speeds between the two were similar.

Overall, the multiple benefits in creating a Bus Rapid Transit system are significant. People are always evolving and finding new ways to save time to get from one destination to the other. That’s why it is critical for a strategy like this to exist in the North Avenue by Humboldt Park. This would enable residents to travel reliable and at the same time helping the environment and the community to become something better.
