Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Names 2014 HOPE Award Winners

Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (PSMEMC) presented the 2014 HOPE Award to Margaret Slowik, RT (M), Mammography Technologist, Imaging Services, at the Saint Mary Campus. Slowik, a registered technologist credentialed in radiography, mammography and quality management, joined PSMEMC in 1990.

Presence Behavioral Health recognized Janette Gilmartin, OTR/L, Senior Behavioral Health Clinician and Occupational Therapist, with the HOPE Award. An employee since 1995, she works at the Presence Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic at the Saint Mary Campus.

Slowik and Gilmartin, a Humboldt Park resident, were honored with these first-time awards for exhibiting Presence Health values – Honesty, Oneness, People and Excellence (HOPE). The winners were nominated because they exemplify these values through daily work with patients, residents and colleagues – and serve as role models in the community.

The two honorees were surprised with the awards, which were presented at a recent luncheon program at the medical center. The event was attended by the 38 nominees along with their managers and supervisors. The winners receive $500, a one-night stay at a hotel and dinner with Sandra Bruce, President and CEO, Presence Health.

More about Margaret Slowik

“Our medical center is pleased to recognize Margaret as the 2014 HOPE Award recipient,” said Stonish Pierce, Regional Chief Ambulatory and Ancillary Officer, PSMEMC. “Margaret’s continued initiative and commitment to quality and excellence in all that she does to assist our patients and families, physicians and fellow staff members exemplify the Presence values. We are fortunate to have Margaret as a team member. Our patients are fortunate to benefit from her knowledge, compassion and inspiration.”

Slowik attended the Saint Mary of Nazareth School of Radiology in 1973. She has worked in various areas of radiology over the years – including general X-ray and most recently, mammography. A valued member of the Imaging Services team, she demonstrates excellence in the quality of her work and looks for ways to enhance patient care. Slowik volunteers for many PSMEMC community events – including health fairs, screenings and Cancer Survivors’ Day. She is an active member of the Pride Council, Regional Employee Engagement Council and the Breast Program Leadership Committee at PSMEMC.

More about Janette Gilmartin

Gilmartin’s area of expertise is rehabilitation services for persons with severe and persistent mental health conditions. She oversees three intensive outpatient programs at the Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic – the only program of its kind in Illinois that is offered in three languages. Gilmartin sponsors an annual Christmas party for hundreds of poor children in families from the community – personally undertaking fundraising efforts to obtain gifts for all the youngsters in these families. She often brings in bags of food and items for patients. She rallies patients to advocate for behavioral health funding in Chicago and Springfield.

“Clinic employees know they can turn to Janette for guidance and creative problem solving even in the most difficult of circumstances,” said Frank Perham, Vice President, Presence Behavioral Health. “She once helped a family of five find accommodations after they were evicted from their home. She never fails to have hope for even the most difficult cases and inspire her peers by looking at all situations with an eye to strength and opportunity.”

A committee of PSMEMC employees selected the two winners. Across the system, Presence Health is recognizing 19 HOPE Award recipients. The winners will attend the November system-wide HOPE Award ceremony.

“I am so proud of Margaret and Janette – and all the nominees,” said Martin Judd, Regional President and CEO, PSMEMC. “They are on the frontlines providing outstanding care to our patients every day. We are blessed to have the winners and nominees on our health care team.”
