LUCHA to Host “77 Proud” Financial Education Resource Fair

Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA) and Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers will host a “77 Proud” Financial Education Resource Fair on Saturday, February 6, 2016. The resource fair is designed to help empower and serve the residents of West Town, Humboldt Park, Logan Square and Hermosa. This free event will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Bernhard Moos Elementary School, located at 1711 North California Avenue, Chicago, IL 60647.

“77 Proud represents the best of Our Chicago coming together to help financially empower residents,” said Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers. “By meeting people where they live and work, out in the community, we are working to provide tools and resources to help transform their lives and their neighborhoods.”

“All Chicagoans deserve equal access to financial resources” said Juan Carlos Linares, LUCHA’s Executive Director. “Unfortunately, many of our community members currently lack the education or access to the financial system that they need to l lead empowered and stable lives. It’s my goal that the ‘77 Proud’ Financial Education Resource Fair will enable all of our community members to access the economic opportunity and educational resources that we all strive for.” LUCHA’s resource fair is one of 11 events, from January through March, that is taking part in the “77 Proud” initiative, sponsored by City Treasurer Kurt Summers. Chicago is now a leader in the advancement of financial education, as United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently named it “model city” for its efforts. Chicago’s approach to financial education is a citywide effort to educate both adults and children through community programs, including the “77 Proud” Initiative.

In conjunction with the Office of the City Treasurer, LUCHA’s resource fair will feature over 20 community organizations and partners from throughout Chicago, including the Center for Changing Lives and Erie Neighborhood House. Summers will meet with community residents at the event from 12:00-12:30 p.m. to discuss his plans for improving financial education among Chicagoans.

“Every one of us dreams of the same things – having a roof over our heads, a home to call our own, and a legacy to pass down to our children,” said Juliana Gonzalez-Crussi, LUCHA’s Director of  Housing Counseling and Advocacy. “Our resource fair is a way for us to ensure that families in neighborhoods like Humboldt Park or Hermosa can discover ways and resources to accomplish their financial goals.”

The resource fair will also include locally sourced food provided by Slow Food Chicago, family-friendly music by DJ John Simmons, and fun activities for children.
