Doris Brown, Special Projects Manager at Chicago Commons, was honored as a “Neighborhood Treasure” at the Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) annual meeting October 16. The Garfield Park Conservatory was a fitting backdrop for celebrating Ms. Brown, who has worked tirelessly in West Humboldt Park to bring needed resources to underserved residents, particularly seniors.

Ms. Brown gives her time to several Boards and advisory councils in West Humboldt Park, and she served for three years as the Chair of the Humboldt Park New Communities Program Safety Committee. She was a fixture at the Humboldt Park summer B’Ball on the Block program, where she volunteered, worked to connect area youth to opportunities, and cheered on good plays and sportsmanship. Colleagues have come to count on her as someone who always shows up, raises her voice, and fights the good fight.

John Groene, Director of the west Humboldt Park NHS office, praised Ms. Brown “for her long-term commitment to west Humboldt Park that goes far beyond her job description. She has taken on volunteer and leadership positions for too many coalitions to count. She’s a tireless contributor.”

Other NHS honorees included Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins, 16th District, for Auburn Gresham; Craig Chico, for Back of the Yards; Jeff Bartow, for Chicago Lawn/Gage Park; Carl Missele, for NHS of the Fox Valley; Clyde Ross, for North Lawndale; and Silas Woods, for Roseland.
