Girl-Focused Nonprofits Collaborate to Strengthen Chicago

Five local nonprofits came together to discuss the issues facing girls in Chicago’s communities and how to support them. As part of Chicago Community Trust’s “On the Table” series, the conversation addressed how to strengthen underserved communities to respond to girls’ needs.

Local activists who focus on supporting girls included April Lillstrom (Urban Initiatives), Pam Asen (Between Friends), Sanjana Kantayya (Girl Forward), Bridget Strathman (Planned Parenthood), Luisa Calixto (Casa Central), Beth Tumiel (Girls in the Game) and the conversation was facilitated by Meghan Morgan (Executive Director, Girls in the Game).

“Tell young girls they are role models, and then give them the tools and education to use their confidence,” April from Urban Initiatives said. Attendees shared how important it is to listen to girls when creating programs, the value of finding mentors who come from similar experiences as girls and the unique issues facing girl refugees, immigrants and victims of domestic and sexual abuse.

The event provided community leaders with insight into new program initiatives, possible collaborations between organizations and inspiration to continue to support girls in Chicago’s underserved communities in multiple capacities.

“It’s so important now more than ever to elevate girls’ voices in our community” facilitator Meghan Morgan said.
