Fitness 4 Kids Health Fair Comes to the Humboldt Park Community

Association House of Chicago’s Fitness 4 Kids Health Fair takes place each August to increase community knowledge about the risks associated with inactivity and obesity. This year’s Fitness 4 Kids theme is “Dance” with dance-related physical activities such as Zumba, and performances by AfriCaribe (Bomba group), and Dance Academy of Salsa taking place throughout the day.

Fitness 4 Kids will offer participants free health screenings and school physicals, raffles, healthy snacks, as well as health information in both English and Spanish. The health fair will also provide back to school haircuts for students from student at a local haircut school. The first 250 children will receive book bags filled with school supplies.

“Today nearly half of Chicago Public School students are overweight, especially low-income Latino and African American children,” said Nilmari Donate- Melendez, Director of Prevention & Educational Development programming at Association House. “Fitness 4 Kids Health Fair is our school year kick-off to show families that making healthy choices doesn’t need to be time consuming or expensive.”

The Asthma Van, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Dental Mobile, Diabetes Empowerment Center, Erie Family Health Center, Head Start Easter Seals, Junior League of Chicago’s Kids in the Kitchen, Walgreens Flu Shots, YMCA McCormick, and others will be providing information and services throughout the day.

All the activities and services at the event are at no cost to attendees and are provided by Association House staff, the Association House Prevention & Educational Development division, with funding provided by Aetna, and more than 20 community groups and businesses.
