The 606 Phenology Workshop for Community Volunteers

March 30, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Become a nature observer for The 606!

We’re looking for community volunteers who would like to monitor and report on plants that make up The 606 park and trail landscape. In other words, practice phenology, the study of the timing of life cycle events of plants and animals, for example, when birds migrate, insects emerge, and plants leaf out and flower.

Is this volunteer opportunity for you?

Do you love walking outdoors?  Are you available to make regular visits to The 606 to monitor a group of plants? Love the idea of contributing to scientific research in your neighborhood?

Hands-on Workshop:

No science background? No problem.  Workshop leader, Jean Linsner, will cover what you need to know to get started monitoring the serviceberry and lilac shrubs. You’ll learn about the project, how to conduct plant observations, record data, and share you observations about the plants of The 606 as part of Environmental Sentinel—the trail-wide, plant-based artwork designed by The 606’s lead artist, Frances Whitehead.

Interested?

  • Register for and attend the training workshop March 30–Dress for the weather!
  • Conduct frequent plant observations of a section of The 606 from April through November 2019. Roughly one-two hours/week time commitment between April and June; lighter time commitment in summer and fall.
  • Record observations using USA-National Phenology Network/ Nature’s Notebook protocols and data sheets—requires access to a computer with internet connection.
  • Participate in volunteer check-ins and share feedback to help us grow the program.

If you’re pretty sure you can meet these expectations, we’d love to have you participate in this free workshop.

The event is free but registration is required. Register on Eventbrite.
