CALOR
For almost 25 years, CALOR (Comprensión y Apoyo a Latinos en Oposición al Retrovirus) has offered hope and help to people with HIV/AIDS, and other disabilities, in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood.
Now a division of Anixter Center, one of the largest nonprofit organizations serving people with disabilities in the Chicago area, CALOR’s history dates back to 1990. That year it began as a grassroots organization to support Latinos impacted by HIV/AIDS. At that time, the needs of this Latino community were simply not being met by other organizations. CALOR responded by first providing support groups and then expanding to offer counseling, testing, prevention education and housing.
Having established itself as a key provider of specialized services for Latinos impacted by HIV/AIDS, CALOR now serves a wider community, including all people of color with HIV/AIDS and other disabilities. In 2012, more than 20 percent of those seeking CALOR’s services were African American.
Today CALOR is a recognized leader in HIV/AIDS support services on Chicago’s west side. And it is constantly looking for ways to better serve those in need.
CALOR’s confidential services are grouped into five key areas:
- Prevention and Education (including free HIV testing at multiple locations)
- Case Management
- Substance Abuse Counseling and Education
- Employment
- Housing
All services are provided in a comfortable environment by a bilingual staff.
Rock Solid Health
Rock Solid is a private fitness and personal training studio that wants to help its clients gain rock-hard muscles and good health through small group yoga and boot-camp classes and personal-training sessions. In this intimate brick space with soaring tin ceilings, members use instability balls, kettlebells, rowing machines, and free weights, burning fat and building muscle on their way to achieving their fitness goals.
Erie Family Health Center
Erie Humboldt Park Health Center is our second largest health center and provides a wide variety of services for men, women and children — including adult primary care, women’s health care, behavioral care, pediatric care, prenatal care and outreach to enhance the health of the Humboldt Park community. You can come to our Humboldt Park health center for everything from free pregnancy tests and school physicals to cholesterol checks and diabetes management. We even offer counseling services to help you deal with family problems or emotional issues.
Erie Humboldt Park also has a five-chair, state-of-the-art dental facility that provides comprehensive oral health services — from cleanings and fluoride treatments to crowns and root canals – to children and pregnant women. Adult dental patients also must be medical patients of Erie Family Health Center.

Our Mission
The WasteShed seeks to provide Chicago with an organized, affordable, and reliable resource for repurposed art, craft, and school materials, and with a dynamic center for activities pertaining to sustainability, art, craft, education, and material culture. We connect Chicagoans who are interested in:
- living more sustainably
- seeking inspiration in unconventional materials
- getting the most out of the resources they have to hand
- or just making projects at a low cost.
While sustainability is the ultimate goal, creative reuse foregrounds practical, economical, and fun hands-on activities as points of entry into larger discussions about the things we own, and the way we live.

Our People
Eleanor Ray is the Director of The WasteShed. She discovered creative reuse as an installation and costume artist, and developed her ideas in the nurturing environment of SCRAP PDX. She was also General Manager of the Creative Reuse Warehouse, and spearheaded their collaboration with the ReBuilding Exchange before plunging headfirst into the brackish waters of The WasteShed.
