REDES! Mental Health First Aid En Español

As a pioneer of MHFA in Chicago, during its debut in 2008, Community Counseling Centers of Chicago (C4) was the only agency with certified instructors providing MHFA trainings throughout the community. Since bringing it to Chicago and Illinois, C4 has established a solid base in offering MHFA trainings.

Most recently, C4’s Associate Director, Viviana Ploper, has been vital to the agency’s piloting The new Spanish curriculum program. Ploper was particularly instrumental in the adoption of MHFA into Spanish.  She was part of a national team of six Latinas whose goal was to create a quality, culturally competent product that accurately reflects the Latino culture.  Ploper recently authored an article published by National Council, one of three entities that formed Mental Health First Aid USA.  “As part of the adaptation team, I piloted the Spanish adaption in Chicago for 23 community health clinic workers where Latinos are identified as a high-risk group for depression, anxiety and substance use.  The training resonated with this group, and speaking in the workers’ native language brought a sense of intimacy, confidence and competency to participants.’   The Spanish Adaptation of MHFA is being released this spring. Plans are underway to make C4 the first agency to implement and offer MHFA in Spanish in Chicago during the summer of 2013.
