SUMMARY:Black Narratives Matter: A Youth Workshop on Racial Justice and Bookmaking
DESCRIPTION:Join Read/Write Library this January for a free 3-week after school course geared to local youth in the community. Created and taught by Kayla McClain (Masters of Arts in Arts Education candidate at School of the Art Institute of Chicago)\, Black Narratives Matter investigates the untold history of racial justice topics such as racial justice in the courts\, police brutality and what is missing from how students are taught in schools. While examining the history of violence against people of color and connecting the dots to events of today\, participants will create their own narratives along with illustrations from day to day activities to create books. \nBlack Narratives Matters is a collaborative dialogically community-based workshop grounded on the foundation of providing students with a safe space to express themselves throughout art while participating in an educative experience. The purpose of creating the book is to highlight each student’s experience\, what they have learned from this course and to enhance their sense of empowerment and self-esteem once they leave the course. \nBooks will be exhibited in a concluding opening celebration on January 25th\, open to the public\, family & friends. \nRead/Write Library is wheelchair accessible with gender neutral restrooms. For specific accommodations and additional questions\, please email us at info@readwritelibrary.org \nDates: Mon January 7th – Thurs 24th\nTime: 5:30-6pm every day Mon-Thurs\nCost: FREE \nDetails: https://readwritelibrary.org/events/black-narratives-matter-racial-justice-bookmaking\nShare on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Human Library at the Read/Write Library
DESCRIPTION:Human Library Chicago chapter organizes an event at the Read/Write Library. This event is free and open to the public. Books available at this event will be updated. Stay tuned! \nA Human Library is an event that aims to create dialogue and understanding between people. Individuals volunteer as human ‘books’ and participants in the event can ‘read’ the book- meaning they would have a one on one conversation with the volunteer and share in a dialogue about that individual’s experience. ‘Books’ are volunteers from all walks of life who have experienced discrimination based on race\, religion\, sexual preference\, class\, gender identity\, sex\, age\, lifestyle choices\, disability and other aspects of their life. The Human Library provides the opportunity for the community to share and understand the experiences of others in their community. \nAbout the Read/Write Library:\nRead/Write Library collects\, preserves\, and provides access to community media in order to inspire and promote diverse modes of cultural production and civic engagement. It strives to raise the visibility of work produced by Chicagoans of all backgrounds in order to reveal connective threads across neighborhoods\, generations\, and cultures and to encourage inquiry into and ownership of the historical record. The Library recognizes the contributions that all community members make to co-creating a city and believes that learning to value these stories plays a vital role in building empathy\, community pride\, and the ability to see oneself as a change agent. \nVenue is ADA accessible and has gender neutral bathrooms. \nNot sure what a Human Library event looks like? Check out this video. \nInterested in volunteering with us? Fill out an application here.
