Tavern Talk: New Monuments for New Cities Exhibit

April 23, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The 606 is the Chicago site for “New Monuments for New Cities,” an international art initiative launched by Friends of the The High Line. Each of the five participating cities (Houston, Austin, Toronto, and New York and Chicago) selected five artists to create a 2D response to the following prompt: Imagine a monument for today, for your city, for your country, for your community. As monuments to a deeply embedded, singular, and imbalanced history of the victors of the Western world are torn down every day, what will go up in their stead, on these empty pedestals and plinths, in the empty sky above public squares and urban plazas? What rises from the rituals of their removal?

The Trust for Public Land and partnered with five Chicago organizations to select artists to participate in the exhibition. All five will be present to discuss their own work and how it relates to the larger project:

Richard Santiago (Tiago), Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center

Tonika Lewis Johnson, Grow Greater Englewood

Eric J. Garcia, National Museum of Mexican Art

Chris Pappan, American Indian Center

Zissou Tasseff-Elenkoff, Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail

The event is free but registration is required. Register on Eventbrite.
