Join Read/Write Library this January for a free 3-week after school course geared to local youth in the community. Created and taught by Kayla McClain (Masters of Arts in Arts Education candidate at School of the Art Institute of Chicago), Black Narratives Matter investigates the untold history of racial justice topics such as racial justice in the courts, police brutality and what is missing from how students are taught in schools. While examining the history of violence against people of color and connecting the dots to events of today, participants will create their own narratives along with illustrations from day to day activities to create books.

Black Narratives Matters is a collaborative dialogically community-based workshop grounded on the foundation of providing students with a safe space to express themselves throughout art while participating in an educative experience. The purpose of creating the book is to highlight each student’s experience, what they have learned from this course and to enhance their sense of empowerment and self-esteem once they leave the course.

Books will be exhibited in a concluding opening celebration on January 25th, open to the public, family & friends.
