Registration Open for Girls in the Game Summer Camp
Chicago Nonprofit Offers Summer Camp to Keep Girls Safe & Active
Girls in the Game Launches 22nd Annual Summer Camp
For the 22nd consecutive summer, Girls in the Game will be hosting their Sports & Leadership Summer Camp to keep girls active and safe this summer. Last summer, Chicago saw the most violent August in nearly 20 years, and the camp targets girls in neighborhoods that see an uptick in violence in the summer months on the south and west sides of the city.
Girls in these violent neighborhoods are less likely to go outside or be active in the summer months. Girls in the Game responds to this need by offering safe play space at Douglas Park in North Lawndale where 150 girls come for six hours of sports, health and leadership programs each weekday during the month of July. Over the course of Summer Camp, girls learn 30 different sports, often from professional athletes who act as guest coaches.
Most importantly, they see leadership in action. Members of Girls in the Game’s Teen Squad program act as counselors to younger girls every day at camp so girls of all ages have the chance to see what types of leaders they can become whether they are 7-years-old or 17-years-old.
“My favorite memory from Summer Camp is going to overnight camp. I had so much fun sleeping in a cabin, tie dying shirts and just being able to make friends. I got a support system out of being a camper because everyone there supported me. I am now able to pay it forward by being a counselor. I am able to provide the same openness to the younger girls that I coach at camp,” Rose, Junior Counselor.
Registration for Summer Camp is still open, with camp starting on July 6th and running from 9am-3pm through August 1st. Those who wish to register can visit Girls in the Game website or call t 312-633-4263 for more information.
